About The Yellow Wallpaper
Adapted for the stage by sister team Caitlin Ort and Megan Ort, The Yellow Wallpaper is a dance-theater thriller based on the classic story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
Jane, a 19th-century woman suffering from postpartum depression, is prescribed “The Rest Cure,” the era’s leading treatment for so-called “female hysteria.” Isolated for months in a room and forbidden any social engagement, reading, writing, or mental stimulation, Jane slowly begins to lose her grip on reality.
This adaptation explores female empowerment and mental health through a fusion of movement, music, and classic text that blurs the line between reality and the surreal, revealing how even well-meaning relationships and intentions can quietly uphold systems of oppression.

A Note from the Director
When Charlotte Perkins Gilman published "The Yellow Wallpaper," she gave herself agency and the power to expose a system that silenced and suppressed women. Putting this story on stage today is a continuation of that act of resistance. As artists, creating our own work is an act of agency too — choosing what stories get told and how. It is easy to look back at The Rest Cure and think, “How could anyone have believed this was humane?” But we still live in a time when women’s access to healthcare and bodily autonomy is still up for debate. At its core, this is a story about a woman who wasn’t believed when she asked for help. How many more times will we have to tell that story before the culture shifts? Directing this piece is a reminder that art can challenge, connect, and heal. I hope that sharing this play will spark conversation, reflection, and build community.
